LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAMS

To fulfill the language requirement at Spelman College, the department of World Languages and Cultures offers a variety of language course offerings.

To satisfy the language requirement a student must first take a placement exam in the language. The placement exam will inform the student what course to enroll in, or if the student is exempt through placement testing or transfer credit.

Good to Know

  • Language placement exams are taken during the summer months, in preparation for Fall semester and during the first 2 weeks of Fall and Spring.
  • If more than a year (2 semesters) lapses between the placement exams and a student’s enrollment in a language class, a student will be required to retake the placement exams.
  • A student who scores high on a placement exams will be invited to an oral interview with a faculty member. Based on the interview results, a student may be exempted from the core language requirement.
  • A minimum grade of D is required for all core classes, unless you are Majoring or Minoring (in that case, a student may not earn less than a C+).
